THE OBSIDIAN MAGAZINE
IS RECLAIMING THE BLACK NARRATIVE
Issue 2
the second issue of Obsidian Magazine is a powerful tribute to Black photographers who have captured the essence of our culture across generations. This issue explores the vital role these image makers have played as the first to respond to our history, preserving moments of everyday life, movement, and meaning with intention and care. From early pioneers to rising voices, we highlight the artistry, commitment, and vision that shaped how we see ourselves and how the world sees us.
Issue 1
Our inaugural issue, "All Things Policy," dives deep into the history of Policy—the numbers game that served as an economic powerhouse for Black communities, particularly in Bronzeville, Chicago. The Policy Kings were more than just entrepreneurs; they were visionaries who financed hospitals, built an airport, supported artists, and created economic opportunities that shaped generations.
